ESCC Crowned Undefeated AW Green Shield Premiers28-Jan-2020 On Thursday the 23rd of January Eastern Suburbs Cricket Clubs’ Green Shield side were crowned Undefeated Premiers, defeating St George by 5 wickets at Waverley Oval.
Having gone through all of their regular rounds undefeated as well as knocking off Parramatta and Bankstown in the Quarter and Semi Finals respectively, our young Dolphins had all the momentum heading into the day.
On a sunny Waverley Oval day, the Dolphins lost the toss and were sent into bat first against the Saints. St George were left to rue this decision immediately with Easts’ bowling spearhead Angus Hayman claiming an early wicket.
The rest of St George’s innings would prove to be stop-start, with only Sam Konstas registering a score of note with a well compiled 71.
For the Dolphins Angus Hayman was reliable as ever, taking three wickets while spinners Ned Patterson and Matt Sidhu chipped in with two apiece to have St George all out for 220.
The Dolphins innings got off to a slow start, losing opening duo Jonah Trope and Asher Learmonth early on, with Hamish Morrison following them back to the pavilion not long after having made a quickfire 25.
This meant that the Dolphins Dubbo duo, Koda Sissian and Captain Tom Coady, would need to string together a partnership to get Easts back on track.
The two would do just that, putting on a match defining 126 run partnership, before Coady lost his wicket on 77 when a mistimed cover drive found the fieldsman. Meaning the Dolphins only required a further 27 to be crowned Premiers.
While St George had a brief glimmer of hope, snagging the wicket of Ritish Sethi, Olly White and Sissian would guide Easts to a nervy 5 wicket win.
Sissian would go onto be awarded the Ken Cunningham Medal for player of the final, with his 77 not out guiding the Dolphins to victory and a Premiership.
Later in the day following the presentation of the Shield, it was announced that bowlers Angus Hayman and Ned Patterson were to be named in the AW Green Shield merit side following their outstanding performances during the regular rounds.
From rounds 1-7 Angus took 17 wickets, while Ned took 15.
