GEBER SCORES FIRST WIMBELPHIN WIN

Fitness guru Wayne Geber won through to the second round of Wimbelphin with a hard-fought 21-17 victory over debutant Tim Brown.

Geber trailed 8-5 early before steadily improving and looking comfortable until the score reached 20-15. Brown sensed a slight tightening in his opponents play but couldn't pull back the margin.

After the match Geber was pleased with his display.

"It was a strong performance and I'm looking forward to the next round," he said.

"I would give a lot to receive the trophy on presentation night."

Adam Ezekiel is the only other round one winner so far disposing of Nathan Loveday 21-10.

With many matches due to be played over the coming weeks, watch this space for further news.

ZAMPA AND ARMSTRONG GAIN HIGHER HONOURS

Easts cricketers Tim Armstrong and Adam Zampa were named the Australian squad for next month's under-19 cricket World Cup in New Zealand.

Its a great achievement and the pair follow in the footsteps of fellow Dolphin David Warner, who played in the tournament four years ago.

Western Australian allrounder Mitch Marsh, the son of former Australian opener and coach Geoff and brother of Shaun, will captain the squad for the January 15-30 tournament, which features 16 teams.

Also in are Queensland fast bowler Alister McDermott, NSW paceman Josh Hazlewood, who have also played first-class cricket.

Australia open their tournament against the United States on January 16, with other pool matches against Ireland (January 17) and South Africa (January 20).

Australia: Mitch Marsh (WA, capt), Tim Armstrong (NSW), Tom Beaton (WA), Nick Buchanan (Qld), Jackson Coleman (Vic), Luke Doran (NSW), Ben Dougall (SA), Jason Floros (Qld), Josh Hazlewood (NSW), Alex Keath (Vic), Nicolas Maddinson (NSW), Alister McDermott (Qld), Kane Richardson (SA), Tom Triffitt (Tas), Adam Zampa (NSW).

DOLPHINS FLY THE FLAG OVERSEAS

EASTS opening batsman Sam Robson brought up his maiden first-class century for Middlesex on the hallowed turf of Lords. Easts media man come bowler Max Abbott was fortunate enough to arrive at the ground as Robson nudged a ball around the corner for a single to move to 73.

From there Robbo remained calm despite a few nervous moments running between the wickets with his injured batting partner to bring up his century with a flick through mid-wicket before saluting the MCC members and the decent sized crowd for a first-class game.

Robson was eventually fired out LBW from the umpire to a ball that to this reporter looked very high for 110 off 273 balls. The century was also an important one for Middlesex who recovered somewhat from the early failured of their big gun players to finish the day for the record at 6-280.

Justin Waller has also been in hot form for his Liverpool league team Formby. At the time of writing Justin has accumulated 1025 runs at 57.33 with still 6 weeks to go in the season and is line to pass the club record for most runs.

Aside from this Brad Haddin and Nathan Bracken regularly representing Australia in the one-day tours of South Africa and the Middle East, the pair played along with David Warner in Twenty20 World Cup squad. Warner made the highest score for the Australians in the disappointing campaign, scoring 63 off 53 against the West Indies. Haddin then went on to bring up an Ashes century in the First Test at Cardiff.

In a further boost to the club three of Easts' female cricketers Leah Poulton, Sarah Andrews and Erin Osborn were also been picked in the respective Twenty20 Women's squad. Giving the Dolphins SIX representatives in total, the most of any club in Australia.

Warner (pictured right), who was mentioned earlier has made his IPL debut for the Dehli Daredevils, smashing 51 off 40 balls in his opening match. See highlights of the innings on this website > http://www.iplt20.com/ipl-video-page.shtml

Tim Armstrong (pictured right) has also been busy playing for the Australian U/19 team against the touring Indian team in Tasmania. Armstrong will hope to continue his solid form shown in the series in a bid to secure selection in the U/19 World Cup squad that will compete in Kenya next year.

BOWER OF POWER

THE WIMBELPHIN final was made an almost non-event as Luke Bower crushed Justin Waller 21-6 21-9 in an unrelenting display of serve volley mini-tennis.

The crowd of over 4 people were demanding their money back after only a very brief exhibition of what was supposed to be the pinnacle of the sport. There were no such apologies from Bower though as he threw his racquet in the air with delight and announced that the sport is "at least I have some silverware for the season."

Waller was far more bitter after the encounter describing the Bower serve as "unwimbelphin like" as the players shook hands after the match.

Whilst this year's tournament had its faults it will now doubt be back next year bigger and better, with the possible introductionof a doubles tournament.

BOWER AND WALLER INTO FINAL

IT will be a classic battle on centre court next Thursday when the serve-volley style of Luke Bower goes up against the rallying Justin Waller.

Bower defeated Nick Berry 21-13 after a mid-match capitulation from the 1st Grade skipper, while Waller held off a fast finishing Adam Ezekiel to win 21-19.

Bets will be taken on the match so stay tuned for more on that as well some social activities.

EZEKIEL DEFEATS BERRY IN WIMBELPHIN CLASSIC WHILE BOWER SHOWS ABBOTT EXIT

IT was a match for the ages but Adam Ezekiel triumphed over Nick Berry 24-22 in a match that according to Berry "flowed and ebbed."

Both players developed leads at various stages but the match appeared headed Ezekiel's way when he led 20-17 and had three match points. But Berry mounted a charge to level the scores at 20-all and after another failed three match points attempts Ezekiel was able to avoid being granted a chokers tag.

Berry however can remain confident of passing through to the semis given this round sees one lucky loser, who loses by the closest margin advance to the semis.

Meanwhile in the "Roddick v Federer" match of the day. The skill and guile of Luke Bower unravelled the power serve of tournament journalist Max Abbott 21-14. Abbott led 10-8 but upon realising that Bower was becoming ever more comfortable on his serve panicked and fell to pieces in a disappointing display.

The last match of the Super Six round will be played between Zac Zinman and Justin Waller on Tuesday.

DOLPHINS GAIN HIGHER HONOURS

On Friday three of our cricketers, Brad Haddin, Nathan Bracken and David Warner, played in the Australian One Day Side together in Sydney.

In addition to this, Cricket Australia announced today its Women's 15 player squad today to compete in the up-coming ICC Womens World Cup. Our Eastern Suburbs Womens team has three players named in this squad being Leah Poulton, Sarah Andrews and Erin Osborne.

On behalf of the Committee of Management we congratulate them on their selections and wish them all the very best with their up-coming matches.

WAVERLEY OVAL GRANDSTAND UPDATE

By Club President - Peter Lovitt

It is with much excitement that I write to you here the plans for the new Grandstand at Waverley Oval.

Waverley Council has issued the Concept Plans for public discussion. It is anticipated that construction will commence towards end of 2009 with completion mid-end 2010.

All club members are encouraged to submit written proposals supporting the development, to ensure that Waverley Oval, with the addition of this grandstand is a leading grade cricket ground in Sydney.

Full details can be obtained on the - WaverleyCouncil Website.

In addition to the regular facilities (change rooms etc), the proposal
includes the inclusion of a club-room, indoor sports centre (including two
cricket nets) a community / function room and improved seating areas. With
many facilities built underground, this will have minimal visual impact.

ZINMAN DOWNS TOP SEED CLARENCE

Zac Zinman has knocked out Greg Clarence in the final fixture of the second round of the Wimbelphin Championships. An untidy display of serving from Clarence including six faults handed the initiative to his left-handed opponent who took it willingly and closed out the match 21-15.

The match was highlight of the tournament so far which has been dogged by injuries and absences to key players. However the Qualifying Finals will be held next week and will match up as follows.

Justin Waller v Zac Zinman; Adam Ezekiel v Nick Berry; Luke Bower v Max Abbott.

Warner Walking on a Dream

After blasting 89 off 43 balls on debut for Australia David Warner took time out from his busy morning of media to talk with Max Abbott.

Describe how you feel after a performance like that on your debut?

Pretty bedazzled actually I still feel like I haven't woken up because it was an amazing atmosphere to be out there in front of 65,000 Melbournians was unbelievable. Im also pretty cooked because I've been up since 6:30am doing interviews.

Did you ever think you could really pull off a performance like you did?

No but I was joking around with some mates beforehand who were saying imagine if you get man of the match and I thought it would be remarkable to do that but just my recent form in the Twenty20's and one-day games for NSW meant that I just kept backing myself and kept doing what I've been doing and fortunately it came off again.

How about that over off Steyn?

(Laughs)I've never played the duck and tuck in my life it was just ridiculous and the one(six) over midwicket just seemed to keep going.

How were the boys in the camp before the game?

Awesome they were all very welcoming and made me feel a part of it so it was good.

Did Ricky Ponting say anything to you after the innings?

He just patted me on the back and said 'well done that's the way you play and you did it tonight for us so well done'

Going to Brisbane after being on such a high is it going to be hard to back that up again?

Yeah well the Twenty20 can take it out of you and combined with the traveling it will be tough but I've just got to start from scratch again and see if I can get a few away early and hopefully just keep going.

HADDIN AND WARNER MAKE THEIR MARK

By Max Abbott (Pic: Kirk Powell)

IT was a special weekend for the Easts Dolphins Cricket Club with two of its brightest stars Brad Haddin and David Warner making their mark on the Australian cricketing landscape.

Despite being unable to play for the Dolphins so far this season due to international commitments, Haddin did the club proud by scoring his maiden Test century against New Zealand on Sunday for Australia.

Since making his Test debut earlier this year, Haddin has been determined to make his own mark in Test cricket after being entrusted with the difficult task of following in the footsteps of wicket-keeping legend Adam Gilchrist. His innings of 169 from 222 balls emphatically announced his arrival on the scene.

Haddin becomes the first Easts player since Greg Matthews in 1991 to score a Test match hundred for Australia.

Whilst not attracting as much global attention 22-year-old David Warner also made a breakthrough innings in his career for NSW in a Ford Ranger Cup game against defending champions Tasmania on Saturday.

Whilst known around at Easts for his attacking style, Warner showed it on at the state level for the first time, smashing 165 not out off 112 balls to guide the Blues to victory. The innings was the highest by a New South Welshman in one-day cricket.

Easts Cricket Club President Peter Lovitt was delighted with the two results.

"It's a fantastic achievement for the club that two of our cricketers have scored such brilliant hundreds, the club is very proud of them," Lovitt said.

WINTERTON LOSES ANOTHER FIVE

THIRD GRADE captain Lee Kirk has reported that Phil Winterton was late yet again in week two versus Mosman. The clock was stopped 5 mins after the correct arrival time. It has also been decided to deduct a further two minutes given Phil missed the previous round and most surely would have conceded at least this penalty.

The hour has now been shaven down to;

NEVILL PICKED IN BLUES SQUAD

PETER Nevill has been selected in the NSW Blues squad for the Ford Ranger Cup game against Tasmania to be held at Hurstville Oval this Saturday. Nevill will join fellow Dolphin David Warner in the squad with another Easts player in the form of Nathan Bracken hoping to overcome a hamstring injury in time to play in the game. DOLPHINS GAIN HIGHER HONOURS

The club extends its congratulations to the following players selected in representative teams this week;

Tim Armstrong in the NSW U19 Side that will compete in the national championships to be held in Newcastle in December.

Also, Leah Poulton, Sarah Andrews and Erin Osborne in the NSW Breakers. Good luck to them all in their respective tournaments.

RAIN HALTS PLAY AT WIMBELPHIN

By Jim Courier

The infamous Wimbelphin rain halted play on day 4 of the world's most prestigeous mini-grass court tennis tournament. Before the rains came Zac Zinman was able to make his way to the second round with a 21-9 victory over Wayne Geber. Zinman will now face up to Greg Clarence in what will be a blockbuster second round. Clarence outfoxed Ed Zelma 21-14 in an efficient display.

Chris Coen also made his way into the second round over a fiery Bernhard Ballin. A total of eight faults cruelled Ballin's campaign as he went down 21-18. The following matches are scheduled for Day five:

Adam Ezekiel v Nathan Loveday

Nick Berry v Tim Armstrong

Tim Doyle v Luke Bower

Anthony Pratt v James Galbraith

The rest of round one matches will be completed the following Tuesday.

WIMBELPHIN UNDERWAY

TIM Cutler and Justin Waller both made their way through to the second round of Wimbelphin after day one. For Cutler an injury to Nick Leyden allowed him a walkover victory without a point being played. The forfeit was a devastating blow for Laydo he had been labelled a potential dark horse.

In the first played out match Justin Waller defeated Ben Murphy in a gripping match 21-17. Murphy led early but Waller charged home to take out a clearly devastated Murphy.

Cutler and Waller will now take on each other in round two in a couple of weeks. Next Tuesday will see the largely unknown Wayne Geber taking on Zac Zinman and the self appointed number one seed Greg Clarence taking on Ed Zelma. Could all players inform the tournament director if they are unavailable at least 12 hours prior to commencement of training.

WINTERTON COUNTDOWN UPDATE

Despite making it on time in week one against the Hawks Phil Winterton was late by 3 minutes taking the count to ...

TARDY WINTERTON FACING CLIPPERS

THIRD Grade seamer Phil Winterton is facing the possible indignation of having his sandy locks shaved off by his captain Lee Kirk at this year's Christmas Party.

After clocking up 25 minutes in lateness over the first two rounds of the season it was decided by senior members of the Third Grade team that should Winterton clock up an hour over the season, his head will be shaved Lee Kirk.

This website will now begin a Winterton countdown and already the clock is ticking with the man affectionately known as 'filthy' racking up another five minutes last Saturday.

Sources close to the team say it won't be long before Winterton gets the chop with Lee Kirk predicting it will be sooner rather than later.

"I reckon he'll be over his hour before Christmas," Kirk said.

EASTS CHANGES EXCITING: CAMPBELL

By Max Abbott

Season 2008/09 is a year of change for the Easts Dolphins and it is for that reason that Club Coach Alan Campbell is "excited" about the possibilities ahead.

Campbell has highlighted the numerous possibilities that will be available to all players this season after the departure of a few first grade regulars from last year.

"For various reasons there are only six players who played in the one-day final last year that are still with us this year, so there is some exciting opportunities for guys in the lower grades," Campbell said.

Whilst many players have left the club there has also been some exciting additions to the playing roster at Easts this season. Paceman Ed Zelma and wicketkeeper Peter Neville have replaced the departures of Tim Murtagh and Roger Smith in the first grade side.

While in a continuation of the club's strong ties with Northern NSW, off-spinner Mitch Power will play his first season in Sydney and join a pool of spinners that will be vying for the vacant spin position left by Aaron O'Brien.

These are just three of many new faces that have come to club and the influx of these arrivals will hopefully see the club's depth improve right down to the lower grades, where Easts have struggled in previous season.

The addition of Ben Murphy as captain of fifth grade also promises to be a massive boost to the club, which has had an inconsistent record in the bottom grade over the past five seasons.

Murphy, who would definitely have been graded higher, is keen to develop the younger brigade of Dolphins coming through from the Green Shield ranks.

And it is within the younger ranks of the club that the feeling of opportunity is most present.

Three seasons ago the club's only first grade player under 25 was an 18-year-old David Warner. Now Warner is joined by Sam Robson, Greg Clarence, Adam Ritchard, Justin Waller and Peter Neville all as players under the age of 23 in the first grade side.

This season these players will have to take on a greater amount of responsibility and begin a fresh culture within the team that can hopefully foster many premierships in the years to come.

EASTS UNDERWAY AT MANDALONG

The Easts Dolphins opened their 2008/09 campaign with a trial match against Gordon at the picturesque setting of Mandalong Oval. Despite heavy rain to the north and the south the gods spared the rural suburb and a full match of 50 overs each was played.

Easts on a slow outfield and pitch were bowled out in 42 overs for 120 with new arrival Michael Foster impressing with a confident 63 at the top of the order.

He and Pete Neville (23) provided the only real partnership of note as Easts lost wickets at regular intervals.

In the field, the bowlers and fielders produced a tidy performance as Gordon passed the target with five overs to spare and with six wickets in hand. Wickets were shared by Max Abbott, Rob Wilson, Nick Berry and Greg Clarence.

It was a timely wicket for Clarence, who advertised his bowling prowess throughout the day after he had earlier let one go that nipped back with his batting score on 0.

DOLPHINS PUT INTO SHAPE

The younger brigade of the Easts Dolphins have been put into shape this off-season through personal trainer Wayne Geber.

Wayne, who has officially joined as the club's fitness co-ordinator this season has put the players through their paces in the very early hours of Tuesday mornings, combining speed, endurance and strength training elements in the one hour sessions.

Despite the regular complaints of cold mornings and gruelling work-outs, the group consisting of Sean Paul McGoldrick, Brad Chilko, Justin Waller, Tim Doyle, Angus Watson, Angas McDonald, James Gailbraith, Max Abbott, Dan Mitchell, Zac Zinman and the speedster Tom Petrie have all seen big improvements much to the delight of the ever enthusiastic Geber.

"I couldn't be happier with the efforts over the winter, it will turn 50's into hundreds," he said.

Wayne has also been leading the club's Sunday morning sessions and will run some short programs at training throughout the season.

Welcome W!

The club extends its congratulations to Paul and Sarah Byrom on the birth of William.

Dolphins Vs Roosters 20/20 match 7 March 2008

Easts Cricket took on The Sydney Roosters last week in their annual 20/20 Cricket game at Waverley Oval….
The Dolphins batted first and scored 220 off their 20 overs with David Warner scoring 71 and Aaron O'Brien 50.The best of the Roosters bowlers was Braith Anasta with 1-13 and Craig Fitzgibbon 1-25.
In reply The Roosters scored 160 with Brad Fittler scoring a hard hitting 53 and Braith Anasta 22.

Simbledon Tennis Tournament

The inaugural Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club Simbledon Tennis Tournament was held on Sunday at The Palms Tennis Centre Paddington….

It was a interesting start to the day when there was much confusion at the pre tournament brief conducted by organiser "Steve The Sandman Enterprises" …all left the brief knowing less about the rules than they did before they had got there…!!

Evidently tennis not one of Sandman's strengths…up until yesterday he thought the tennis term deuce was spelt "juice"!!...Mmmmm…

With the pre tournament brief done and every-one walking away scratching their heads, the games commenced……there were some epic matches on the outside courts whilst the early favorites in the Tim Murtagh / Tracey Heite pairing cruised through their earlier rounds on centre court…(Tracey,an ex professional tennis player on the USA circuit, being Jimmy's new girlfriend…..and hasn't Jimmy's tennis improved since they have got together…so much so that members of his 4th grade team were asking what a shame it is Jimmy wasn't dating an Australian women's cricketer!!)…

Paul Simonson showed some good form and touch, but alas his partner (R Wilson) was still suffering from Jimmy "Corey" Smiths party the night before..!!!..

The Justin Waller/ Zac Zinman team showed some great touch and looked fantastic in their Culture Club tennis gear!!..(and whilst we are on the topic of 2nd grade players it was suggested that we should have cricket training at The Palms Tennis Courts next week and set up one cricket net…no doubt it would create enormous confusion for the 2nd grade team)..

The Peter Lovitt / John Carlaw team were in great form, and were in the pool of death…only beaten in a tough tie breaker by the eventual Simbledon winners….(Lovitt still consoling John over the 2002 grand final when the mighty Roosters beat the Warriors)…

The Luke Bower / Danny Mitchell "Gaza Strip" team struggled….not surprising given a Cranbrook/ Waverley pairing…Steve Warner was there…and gave the world record for bbq sausage eating a real shake…

Sean Paul Mc Goldrick did his best Dirk Diggler tennis player impersonation whilst unfortunately for Kate Oakenfold she was paired with Kirky Rimmer…

The Adam Ezekiel / Mark Foster team performed well but had their pants kicked by the Max Abbott / Nick Leyden team…whilst Rick Andrew, Andrew Rollins and Brad Chilcoe enjoyed the beers!...

So with the preliminary rounds out of the way the semi finals were set….N Berry / J Dooley v T Petrie / G Leipnik and T Murtagh / T Heite v M Abbott / N Leyden…

The Dooley/Berry team cruised through their semi final….(is there a greater difference in service speed downwards in world tennis between T Petrie's first and second serve??)..

The other semi final was an epic …and was great to see Nick Leyden back at the club…..but unfortunately for the Leyden/Abbott team they bowed out ..( with Max's father shattered that an off spring could "choke" so badly…unfortunately for Max it is something about the genes!!)…

So to the final it was….and with the Murtagh "Henman" Hill set up…the final was a ripper…..with the Justin Dooley/ Nick Berry Team winning through and named the 2008 Simbledon Winners …with Justin named Player of the Tournament….(..for those of you who may have forgotten, Justin also owns the record for the fastest skull ever seen in the back-room..)

Steve presented his 1969 School Boy Swimming Champion Trophy ( ..go figure!..) to the Berry/Dooley team for their win…

So to next year we look forward to a bigger day..and a special thanks to Steve , Zambela, S.P and Jimmy for organising such a great day..

See you next year!
